In the face of injustice, people band together to work for change. Through their influence, what was once unthinkable becomes common. This title traces the history of the gay rights movement in the United States, including the key players, watershed moments, and legislative battles that have driven social change. Iconic images and informative sidebars accompany compelling text that follows the movement from before the 1969 riots at the Stonewall Inn in New York City through activists' work to end prejudice and up to new legislative triumphs in the twenty-first century. Features include a glossary, selected bibliography, Web sites, source notes, and an index, plus a timeline and essential facts. Aligned to Common Core Standards and correlated to state standards. Essential Library is an imprint of Abdo Publishing, a division of ABDO.

Gr 5-8-These series titles set up key events in chronological order. Relevant (though not overly enticing) photographs and illustrations are scattered throughout, adding to the educational value of the books. The authors' points of view in both volumes are unbiased. Extensive back matter is provided. While it is unlikely that these books would be used except for research, students will find the information provided concise, well written, and understandable. Recommended for general purchase.-Sarah Allen, Judson High School, Converse, TX

Beginning with a landmark event, these well-organized, thorough social histories explore key figures and incidents that helped to change laws and attitudes about race, disabilities, and homosexuality. Stock photographs combine with dry texts to present the challenges, successes, and future of each movement, while sidebars and a "Voices of the Movement" feature add context. Reading list, timeline.
